“In April of 2011, I participated in the Pastry Chicago Cookie Competition, and it made me decide to pursue this education. I had always loved to bake, but I had so much fun preparing, and the competition gave me the confidence I needed to make the decision. It made me realize that I could make a career out of it because there is always something new and interesting that you can discover in pastry. It wasn’t an easy decision; it’s such a different industry than the one I’m in currently, but I know it will be worth the challenges because it makes me happy.”

-Holly St. Meyers,
Student in L’Art de la Pâtisserie at The French Pastry School, January 2012

Pastry Chicago’s 1st Annual Nut Brittle Competition

Sweet, salty, crunchy, and open for interpretation: a nut brittle is a classic type of candy that has it all. In traditional recipes, shards of delicious, crackly caramel encase salty peanuts making it one of the most addictive and imitated treats of all time. Whether you’re revamping your grandpa’s famous recipe or experimenting with a new twist, join Pastry Chicago for our first ever Nut Brittle Competition at Treasure Island Foods.

Use any type of nut or flavor competition to impress the professional judges and you could win incredible prizes from KitchenAid! As your entries are being judged, enjoy a demonstration by a Chef Instructor from The French Pastry School and shop the gourmet aisles of Treasure Island Foods. It’s a delicious way to unwind after work!

Chicago, Illinois (March 2, 2012) – On February 25th, the halls of one of the biggest buildings in the world brimmed with activity as the best in the food industry came together to support the 7th Annual For the Love of Chocolate Foundation Gala.  As star chefs served delicious morsels in the myriad showrooms of The Merchandise Mart, models strutted in edible couture, a dance party gained momentum, and crowds gathered around a 9.5’ x 6’ x 5’ replica of Chicago’s Cloud Gate covered entirely in Jelly Belly® Jelly Beans and Chocolate Dips ®.  The foundation’s biggest event of the year, which raises scholarships for students of The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King Colleges at City Colleges of Chicago, drew over 1,500 guests from all over the country.  It was attended by local personalities and celebrity pastry chefs Chris Hanmer, Johnny Iuzzini, and Keegan Gerhard.  Over $100,000 in scholarships were earned with style and fun for students of L’Art de la Pâtisserie and L’Art du Gâteau thanks to a host of sweet and savory chefs, performers, and volunteers.
