Professionals say sugar syrup is the most important and necessary non-alcoholic ingredient in drinks, a must in every bar assortment. If our drink is bland and expressionless the best solution is sugar, which will release closed aromas. Its optimal version that combines well with everything (and does not crunch between teeth) is sugar syrup. How to make simple syrup?
Sugar syrup – Ingredients:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Recipe for sugar syrup for drinks and more:
In a small pot (a liter pot is enough) boil water (one glass), add one glass of plain sugar and mix with a wooden spoon until the sugar is completely dissolved. Boil for 2 minutes. Turn off the burner, add a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice and mix again.
Cool the sugar syrup, then pour into a bottle, seal it tightly and refrigerate. The syrup can stand in the fridge for several days. It can be used for both drinks (e.g. Mohito, Daiquiri or Long Island Ice Tea) and cocktails.
To prevent the yeast from multiplying, pour about 20 ml of pure vodka into the bottle.
How to use sugar syrup?
Sugar syrup does not have to be used only for drinks. Perfect for sweetening wine or compote. Leniuszki, who do not want to mix with a spoon, can use sugar syrup even to sweeten coffee or tea. We can even flavor sugar syrup with spices; the most commonly used are: anise, cinnamon, cardamom and cumin. In this way we will get our own syrup, which will diversify, sharpen and turn up the taste of the drink.
How to flavor sugar syrup?
To flavor a quarter liter of sugar syrup, grind or grate 4 teaspoons of any spice or mixture thereof, heat them in a dry frying pan until light smudges of smoke appear. Remove from heat and mix, tossing the contents. Then put it on fire and heat it until the smudges of smoke reappear. Remove from heat and mix. Repeat this process several times until the aroma of spices is strongly noticeable. Then add a quarter liter of sugar syrup and put the pan on high heat. After boiling, reduce the flame to a minimum and heat the mixture for another 5 minutes. Leave to cool and strain through a fine sieve or several layers of gauze. Our syrup stored in the fridge should be ready to use for several weeks. A similar procedure can be used using fruit. Try the rhubarb or blueberry syrup recipe.
